Natural beauty begins from within. The deeper layers of the skin play a crucial role in determining its appearance, and the skin can look youthful only when these layers are properly nourished. Belinal® is an innovative natural ingredient positioned within the beauty‑from‑within market. Owing to their low molecular mass, the polyphenols in Belinal® are rapidly absorbed, enabling them to pass through cell membranes and act directly inside the cell. These polyphenols exhibit a broad spectrum of anti‑ageing, antioxidant, and anti‑inflammatory activities.
Intracellular and extracellular oxidative stress initiated by reactive oxygen species accelerates skin ageing, which is characterized by the formation of wrinkles and pigmentation. The use of antioxidants is an effective strategy for preventing symptoms associated with photoageing of the skin.
A double‑blind, placebo‑controlled clinical study investigated the effects of the silver fir branch extract Belinal® after oral intake over 84 days. Belinal® demonstrated improvements in several skin parameters in human subjects. Although the changes in individual measured parameters did not reach statistical significance compared with placebo, they showed a consistent positive trend. The most pronounced effect was an increase in skin elasticity, followed by a reduction in TEWL (reflecting improved skin barrier function) and a decrease in wrinkle count and wrinkle area.
Trans‑Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) – 6% Improvement in Skin Barrier Function
A reduction in TEWL (g/h/m²) indicates an improvement in skin condition. In the Belinal® group, TEWL decreased by 6.2%. The difference compared with placebo was not statistically significant (p = 0.61). See Diagram 1.
Improvement of Skin Elasticity by 18%
Skin elasticity increased by 18.6 % at day 84, which was higher than in placebo (14.6%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.61). The maximum improvement in skin elasticity was 36.4%. See diagram 2.
Reduction of Wrinkles by 17%
Wrinkle count decreased by 17.4%, although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.36). Wrinkle area decreased by 11.0%, but this difference was also not statistically significant (p = 0.46). See Diagram 3.
The improvement in these physiological skin parameters may be associated with increased collagen and elastin synthesis within the skin layers, as indicated by a previous topical clinical study with Belinal®. These findings suggest that oral supplementation with the polyphenolic silver fir branch extract Belinal® may support improvements in skin structure and overall skin health from within.
